People of the Extreme North have a thousand years experience of bagging wild animals and birds. Hunting and field economy is developed on the whole Yamal territory. Basic objects of trade are squirrel, musk beaver, Arctic fox and sable.

As tradition annually in spring and autumn, in Yamal amateur hunting for water fawl game-bird is opened on the grounds of the Governor order on the territory of public forests (geese and ducks).

Spring hunt for wild goose and duck is permitted for specific kind of game for a period of no more than 10 days (May, June).

Autumn hunt for game-bird is established from morning dawn of the last Saturday in August till they fly back to the wintering places. From the middle of September till the end of February hunt is permitted for upland game (wood grouse, black grouse, hazel hen) and partridge. By request in Yamal amateur hunt is possible during autumn – winter period (if license is available) for furry animals (white fox, fox, glutton, hare, squirrel, musk beaver), for cloven footed (elk, wild reindeer), for brown bear.
